My master’s thesis involved applying the Community of Inquiry framework to code discussion posts by 3 presences as indicated in the content of each post: “Teaching Presence”, “Social Presence” and “Cognitive Presence”. Here’s a view of a semester’s posts, some in Blackboard, some in WordPress. For this view, I simply counted the number of presences indicated in each post. Rich/complex posts show 2 or three of the presences. Simple/superficial posts show only 1 (or even 0).
This showed that WordPress posts contained signifiers of more presences. Turns out, it’s because teacher told them to write more on WordPress (so, longer posts – cognitive presence), to respond to posts (deeper discourse), to be supportive (social presence), and to lead the community at times (teaching presence).
