So this visual might be cheating, because the project doesn’t focus on visuals, but on experience. Developed by Catherine d’Ignazio, Boston Coastline: Future Past is described by her as “a ‘walking data visualization’ in which 30 participants traced a route from the Climate Change prediction of the city‚Äôs coastline to its history, as a way of physically understanding the future and past of a city changing at scales that are difficult to see and comprehend.”

By tracing the path on a map, the participants have a more concrete understanding of what the data shows. I think this could be extended by ensuring that visualizations do not abstract the representation from the underlying data too much.
